The story behind the debate
About this matchup
Why this debate matters
The Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics are the NBA's foundational rivalry. Boston's early dynasty established the league's first great standard, while the Lakers connected winning basketball to star power and entertainment across several eras.
The case for Boston Celtics
The Celtics built the greatest early dynasty and renewed their success with distinct generations led by Russell, Bird and later championship cores. Their culture emphasizes defense, sacrifice and a record of sustained team identity.
The deciding question
Boston represents continuity, defense and collective tradition; Los Angeles represents reinvention around transcendent superstars. Their repeated Finals meetings make this a rivalry where history is inseparable from the league itself.
